BITE STING HEAL

ABOUT
Bite Sting Heal uses original fables to personify the inexplicable hurt that results from emotional trauma. I have made a series of short animations and installed them in a way that symbolizes the intimacy involved in personal growth and a journey to self-awareness. The fables will follow three characters: a younger version of myself, a jackalope, and a selkie. The jackalope and the selkie are important characters in Irish folklore, which I have chosen to employ as a link to my family heritage, where parts of my pain are rooted. The series does not create a linear narrative; each animation is presented in its own space within the installation, allowing the observer to experience them on their own accord. This technique nods to the individuality of every person’s path to healing. I was affected by emotional trauma in a way that hindered me from trusting people, from believing I was worth staying around for, and from finding somewhere safe, in my mind, to live as myself. For those who have been able to overcome fears, insecurities, or scars, I want them to be able to take a moment for self-gratitude. I want them to be able to see themselves in my stories and realize the courage their recovery took.

PROJECT GOALS
Bite Sting Heal is my capstone project, completed for my thesis at Stevens Institute of Technology. I wanted to use this opportunity to pour my heart into something deep and affecting. Having over a year to complete the work, I felt fulfilled by the creative journey I had taken, as well as the healing I have gotten from it.
